John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Welcome to John F. Kennedy International Airport, also known as JFK. We are the largest airport in the state of New York. JFK Airport is New York's busiest airport, serving over 41 million passengers each year. As one of the busiest airports in the United States and one of the busiest international gateways, JFK Airport is truly a bustling hub of transportation in New York City. Our airport also handles more international air freight by value of shipments than any other airport in the United States.

JFK Airport offers service to destinations in the United States, as well as to Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific and Australia/New Zealand. JFK Airport serves as the primary hub for United Airlines, a secondary hub for Alaska Airlines and America West, and a focus city for American Airlines and Air New Zealand.

History of JFK Airport (JFK)

Construction began in April 1942, when the City of New York contracted for the placing of hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands on the site of Idlewild Golf Course. Planned at first for 1,000 acres, the airport grew to five times that size. First commercial flights began on July 1, 1948. The airport was formally dedicated as New York International Airport on July 31, 1948. It was re-dedicated on December 24, 1963 as John F. Kennedy International Airport, following action of the Mayor and Council of the City of New York, and a resolution of the Commissioners of the Port Authority.

JFK International Airport to Receive $89 Million for Improvements

(PressMediaWire) WASHINGTON October 9, 2008 – The Bush Administration is committing almost $90 million over the next eight years to expand capacity at John F. Kennedy International Airport, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters announced today. She also unveiled new rules designed to lower fares, increase consumer choices and improve service for air travelers using JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports.

“The best way to cut record airline delays nationwide is to expand the limited capacity at New York’s airport,” Secretary Peters said. “Building new taxiways or adding new runways takes time, though, which is why we’re also putting in place measures to cut delays and keep service vibrant over the short term.”

The Secretary said the U.S. Department of Transportation will sign what is known as a “Letter of Intent” committing the federal government to invest $89 million between 2009 and 2016 to fund a series of taxiway improvements at JFK airport. The taxiway improvements include constructing two new taxiways, extending or improving six others and creating new high-speed exit taxiways.

The taxiway work will make it easier for aircraft to maneuver between gates and the airport’s runways, cutting travel time and limiting delays, the Secretary said. She added that the new high-speed exit taxiways will reduce inbound delays to aircraft arriving at JFK.

“The goal is simple, find every possible way to safely add as much capacity as possible to some of the most popular airports in the country,” said Acting Federal Aviation Administrator Robert Sturgell. “Combined with dozens of other capacity improvements we’re making at the airport, this new investment will lead to more flights, fewer delays and a better traveling experience for countless flyers.”

Secretary Peters said that the construction work was expected to begin in 2009 and would be completed by 2014. She added that the Department also was working with local airport officials to move forward on a range of other needed capacity projects, including additional taxiways and other airfield improvements.

She said that until the capacity improvements can come on line, the Department has limited the number of flights that could operate in a given hour at JFK and Newark airports. Combined with existing “caps” at LaGuardia airport, the Secretary said that service at the airport was at risk of stagnating since other competitors are locked out of the market. She cautioned that studies have found airfares at capped airports run 11 to 15 percent higher than at comparable airports without caps.

In order to keep the New York aviation market open to new services that would promote competitive fares, the Secretary also announced final rules to auction a limited number of landing and take-off “slots” at each of the region’s three airports. Under the final rules, airlines operating at JFK, Newark and LaGuardia would receive a 10-year ownership of the vast majority of FAA slots they currently operate, the Secretary said.

However, the new rules call for a gradual auctioning over the next five years of up to 10 percent of the landing and take off slots these airlines currently operate free of charge today. She added that the rules also would lower the hourly operating cap at LaGuardia airport from 75 slots per hour to 71 slots per hour by “retiring” an additional five percent of the slots currently being used, cutting delays by an estimated 40 percent.

Under the rule for La Guardia, existing airlines would keep 988 of the slots they currently operate. The remaining 113 slots would be made available over the next five years by auction to airlines interested in starting new service or expanding current operations at the airport.

In addition, under the rule for JFK and Newark, existing airlines would keep 1,035 of the slots they currently operate at JFK Airport and 1,154 of the 1,245 slots they currently operate at Newark Airport. The remaining 89 slots at JFK and 91 slots at Newark would be made available over a five-year period for airlines wishing to expand their current operations or start new services at either of the airports.

The Secretary said that as a result of the auctions, all airlines would have an opportunity to enter or expand current operations in the New York market. She noted that additional competition like the kind the auctions would bring is proven to lower fares and improve service. She noted, for example, that fares declined by 25 percent at Philadelphia International Airport after a new airline entered that market in 2004. She added that when a new airline began serving JFK airport in 2000, fares fell to some destinations by as much as 50 percent.

“Without slot auctions, a small number of airlines will profit while travelers bear the brunt of higher fares, fewer choices and deteriorating service,” the Secretary said. “Slot auctions, meanwhile, will keep flights to New York affordable, available and vibrant while giving all airlines an opportunity to compete in one of the world’s most popular aviation markets.”

DOT Expands NYC Air Auction Plans Despite Mounting Opposition

OCTOBER 09, 2008 -- To the dismay of airlines, the U.S. Department of Transportation said it would proceed with its plan to auction some slots at the three major New York City-area airports, according to a final rule released today.

DOT and major airlines continue to butt heads on the issue, which has spurred an Air Transport Association-led lawsuit and a ruling by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, that DOT does not have the legal authority to auction slots

Despite the mounting opposition, DOT today defined final plans to gradually auction "up to 10 percent of the landing and takeoff slots these airlines currently operate free of charge today" at John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports. DOT said the rules call for airlines to maintain a 10-year ownership of "the vast majority of FAA slots they currently operate." The auctions would begin next year and continue through 2014.

At LaGuardia, the ruling calls for the capping of slots at 71 operations per hour, down from 75, with the aim to cut delays at the airport by 40 percent. Airlines would maintain control of 988 airport slots, while the remaining 113 "would be made available over the next five years by auction to airlines interested in starting new service or expanding current operations at the airport."

DOT called for similar actions at JFK, where it plans to auction 89 slots over five years, and at Newark, where 91 slots are slated for auction in that period. DOT said any airline could bid in the auctions to "have an opportunity to enter or expand current operations in the New York market."

"Without slot auctions, a small number of airlines will profit while travelers bear the brunt of higher fares, fewer choices and deteriorating service," U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said in a statement today. "Slot auctions, meanwhile, will keep flights to New York affordable, available and vibrant while giving all airlines an opportunity to compete in one of the world's most popular aviation markets."

ATA, the major domestic airline lobbying organization, continued to deride DOT's plan, calling the auction ruling "ill-conceived and one that will result in a lengthy and costly legal challenge." ATA president and CEO James May today noted that the DOT ruling "patently defies the recommendation of the Government Accountability Office, as well as the will of Congress, by attempting to move forward with an illegal auction of airport slots."

Peters called the auctions a short-term measure to curb delays. Other measures include already-implemented flight caps at JFK and Newark, and today's new cap plan at LaGuardia. Though Peters noted studies that find airfares at capped airports can be up to 15 percent higher than those at "comparable airports without caps," she expects the auction plan to keep fares competitive in and out of the New York City-area airports.

Peters today said flight capacity expansion at JFK is the foundation of a longer-term plan to curb delays. DOT today announced the commitment of $89 million through 2016 to expand capacity at JFK, including the construction of two new taxiways and improvements to the six others at the airport. Peters expects construction to begin next year with a target for completion in 2014.

.

OPERATED BY

LaGuardia Airport (LGA) has been operated by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey under a lease with the City of New York since June 1, 1947.

LOCATION

LGA LaGuardia is on Flushing Bay and borders Bowery Bay. It is eight miles from midtown Manhattan.

SIZE

The (LGA) LaGuardia consists of 680 acres and 72 aircraft gates. It is 12.7 feet above sea level.

HISTORY

The site was first occupied by Gala Amusement Park. Transformed in 1929 into a 105-acre private flying field, it was first named Glenn H. Curtiss Airport and later North Beach Airport. Taken over by New York City, it was enlarged by purchase of adjoining land and by filling in 357 acres of waterfront along the east side.

Ground was broken on Sept. 9, 1937, for a new airport, which was built jointly by the City and the Federal Works Progress Administration. It was dedicated on Oct. 15, 1939, as New York City Municipal Airport. On Nov. 2, 1939, the name was changed to New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia Field. On Dec. 2 of that year, it was opened to commercial traffic.

In 1947, the year the airport was leased to the Port Authority, it was renamed LaGuardia Airport. A new Central Terminal Building was opened in 1964 and enlarged in 1967 and 1992.

CENTRAL TERMINAL BUILDING

The Central Terminal Building was dedicated on April 17, 1964, and serves most of the airport’s scheduled domestic airlines.

It is 1,300 feet long and 180 feet wide, with 750,000 square feet of floor space. Originally constructed at a cost of $36 million, the six-block-long structure consists of a four-story central section, two three-story wings and four concourses leading to 38 aircraft gate positions. The Central Terminal Building recently completed a $340 million expansion and modernization. The centerpiece, a $47 million project for a complete redevelopment of the center section, included new elevators and escalators to accommodate the elderly and disabled as well as a new shopping concourse

"The best way to cut record airline delays nationwide is to expand the limited capacity at New York's airport," Peters said. "Building new taxiways or adding new runways takes time, though, which is why we're also putting in place measures to cut delays and keep service vibrant over the short term."

Newark Liberty International Airport EWR,

located in New Jersey approximately 16 miles from midtown Manhattan, is viewed by many as the most traveler-friendly airport in the New York metropolitan area. The airport consists of three terminals – Terminal A, B and C – and is served by all of the major U.S. airlines and numerous international airlines offering nonstop flights around the country and the world. Continental Airlines, which uses EWR airport as a domestic and international hub, transformed Terminal C into a spacious facility with numerous shops and restaurants to pass the time between flights and a new international arrivals facility which allows Continental passengers arriving from overseas to connect with domestic flights without switching terminals. Newark airport’s AirTrain service operates 24 hours a day between the terminals and rental car complex. AirTrain also connects passengers to NJ Transit and Amtrak Northeast Corridor train lines via the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station

Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA: EWRICAO: KEWRFAALID: EWR), first named Newark Airport and later Newark International Airport, is an international airport within the city limits of both Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, United States. It is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Midtown Manhattan (New York City).

The airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also manages the two other major airports in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA), in addition to three smaller airports, Stewart International Airport, Teterboro Airport and the Downtown Manhattan Heliport. Newark is the tenth busiest airport in the United States and the nation's fifth busiest international air gateway; JFK ranks first.

Newark Liberty is the second-largest hub for Continental Airlines, which is the airport's largest tenant (operating all of Terminal C and part of Terminal A). Primarily due to this large hub operation, Continental Airlines is by far the leading carrier in the New York market.FedEx Express operates one of its major cargo hubs at Newark.

In 2007, Newark Airport handled slightly more than 36.3 million passengers, compared to JFK's 47.8 million and LaGuardia's 25.3 million. In total over 111 million passengers used New York airports in 2007, making New York the busiest airport system in the United States in terms of passenger numbers and second in the world behind London.

EWR consists of about 2,027 acres of which the Port Authority acquired 880 of those acres when it began operation of the airport in 1948. The airport is 18.3 feet above sea level. History – Opened on October 1, 1928, EWR, the metropolitan region’s first major airport, was built by the City of Newark on 68 acres of marshland and quickly became the world’s busiest commercial airport. During World War II, the Army Air Corps operated it. In 1948, the Port Authority assumed responsibility for operation and development.

Newark Airport History and Today

The airport has been its current size since the 1970s. Before that, it was much smaller and not nearly as important. However, during the decade of the 1970s, there was significant construction. The airport was also enlarged. It was during this time that two of the main terminals were created. These were terminals A and B. During these years, the airport was named Newark Liberty International Airport. Before this time, it was simply called Newark Airport.

The last of the main terminals, terminal C, was not finished until 1988. During the construction period, the airport was not used very much. However, after Terminal C was completed, the airport's usage expanded dramatically. A company called People Express began to use the airport in the early 1980s, and continued to for many years. Also, around this same time, Virgin Atlantic Airways started to have flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to London. This led to Newark's airport becoming almost as important as JFK in New York City. When People Express merged into the airline Continental, Newark Liberty International Airport became the hub for this airline.

Today, the airport is operated by the same group that operates the other two main airports in the area, JFK International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport. This is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Newark Liberty International Airport is the 10th busiest airport in all of the United States. It is also the 5th busiest international airport in the country. There were 36 million passengers that traveled through the airport in 2006.
Newark Airport (EWR)Terminals and Airport Set Up
There are three passenger terminals in the Newark Liberty International Airport. The two terminals that were first to be completed - Terminal A and Terminal B - both have four levels. Most of the ticket counters are on the top levels. Gates and various businesses as well as shops are on the third floors. The second floors are reserved for international arrivals lounges and baggage claim. On the first floors, one will find parking ramps and other access points for the airport.

Terminal C was the final terminal completed. It has two ticketing levels. One of these is for international check-ins, and the other is for domestic flights. Terminal C also has a mezzanine level between these floors. This is the level where food, shops, and gates are located.

Each of the three terminals is also divided into concourses that are numbered. In Terminal A, one will find concourses A1, A2, and onward. In Terminal B, one will find B1 and onward. And in Terminal C, the concourses are numbered C1 and onward. The airport itself is located on 2,027 acres. There are three runways, and there is also one helipad for helicopter traffic.

(EWR) Newark Airport Airlines

The largest amount of air traffic in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport is from Continental Airlines. This company is the largest tenant of the airport. Newark is the second-largest hub for Continental. Continental Airlines takes up all of Terminal C, and part of Terminal A.

Another important airline in the Newark Liberty International Airport is FedEx Express. Newark is one of FedEx Express's ten major outlets for cargo. This makes the airport even more important, as it is not only a hub for many people, but many packages as well.

The rest of the airport is shared by many other airlines. In Terminal A, one will find AirTran Airways, which operates out of Atlanta. One will also be able to find flights from American Airlines, JetBlue Airlines, United Airlines, and Midwest Airlines. US Airways is also an important airline in Newark.

In Terminal B, one will find some of the smaller airlines, such as Air France and Air Jamaica. Delta, KLM, and EVA Air also operate out of this terminal. In Terminal B, there are also several airlines that operate only seasonal flights. These airlines include Hainan Airlines, and LOT Polish Airlines.

Terminal C is completely a Continental Terminal. Most of the flights that Continental operates are from Terminal C. Therefore; anyone flying Continental will probably be using Terminal C for most of their flights
EWR Newark Airport Airline Destinations
From Newark Liberty International Airport, one can get just about anywhere in the world. For instance, if one is traveling with Continental Airlines, they have over three hundred distinct destinations to choose from. Newark Airport is one of the major Continental Hubs. Therefore, one can also fly to any of the other Continental hubs in order to fly anywhere that Continental goes. Thus, between direct flights and connecting flights, there are thousands of destinations that one can get to from Newark.

The biggest international destinations include London and Paris. There are also flights to cities within both England and France. Therefore, Europe is one of the most common destinations for those flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport.

One can also fly to destinations that are much closer. For instance, the US Helicopter Service operates out of Gate C71. The destination for this is the Downtown Manhattan Heliport. One can also take a helicopter to JFK airport
(EWR) Newark Airport Shops and Businesses      in the Airport
There are both shops and restaurants located in all terminals. In each terminal, one will find shops that cater to just about any need. There are clothing stores, luggage stores, and magazine stands that sell books, travel equipment, and snacks. Each terminal has over twenty shops to choose from.

There are also restaurants and bars for hungry and thirsty travelers. Each Terminal has over fifteen unique restaurants. These are both sit-down restaurants and take-away restaurants. There are also between two and five bars in each terminal. At these bars, one can find drinks, snacks, and other entertainment. The entertainment might include television, music, or chatting with other passengers
(EWR) Newark Airport  Services
Along with the shops, restaurants, and bars, there are other services in the airport that one can find. These services include handicap facilities. Therefore, there are bathrooms, special seating, and assistance available to people who have disabilities. One can access these services by approaching a help or information desk.

There are also car rental services located in Newark Liberty International Airport. Therefore, one can rent a car quite easily. There are sixteen car rental companies that have booths in the airport. Thus, a person can choose the company they would most like to go with.

There are also accommodations in the airport itself. There is a Marriott hotel that is located on the airport's property. The Marriot is not actually connected to any of the terminal buildings, nor is it serviced by the monorail. This means that one must take a shuttle van from the terminal to the hotel.

EWR Newark Airport Security

Airport security is an important factor for Newark Liberty International Airport. This is because the airport was involved in the September 11th, attacks. Thus, security at this airport is among the tightest in the United States. For instance, there is no parking allowed underneath the terminal. Therefore, passengers wishing to park their cars at the airport must park in other areas and take vans and shuttle buses to the terminals. There is a 3,400 space parking garage for these people.

Also, airport security plays an important role in major operations of the airport. For instance, passengers wishing to travel through the airport are asked to arrive much earlier than their particular airline would need them to arrive. This is due to the increased security lines. After 2001, all of the baggage x-ray machines and personal x-ray machines were replaced with machines of the highest technology. The baggage handlers and security personnel have gone through extra training. The Newark Liberty International Airport follows each of the security measures put forth by the United States Government. Therefore, this airport is one of the most secure in the world

White plains, Westchester County Airport

Westchester County Airport has a unique and interesting history. It was built shortly after World War II. It was not built as a public airport. It was built as a home for the Air National Guard, so that they could protect New York City. However, as there began to be more people living in the suburbs in this area of New York, the National Guard unit moved to Newburgh, to the Steward International Airport.

Thus, there was an empty airport. In 1947, the first passenger traffic was seen in Westchester County Airport. At this time, the airport was served by several local and regional airlines. These included Allegheny Airlines, Empire Airlines, and Command Airways. Shortly thereafter, the Airline Deregulation Act was passed, which led to the formations of the main national airlines. Therefore, there was a small amount of downtime within the airport, while the national airlines figured themselves out.

The Westchester County Airport underwent several renovations during this time. Gradually, smaller airlines began to come back to the airport. Currently, the airport is home to 8 airlines. There are 18 different destinations to which one can go from this airport.

Terminals and Layout of  (HPN) White Plains Westchester County Airport

The (hpn) White Plains Westchester County Airport is quite a small airport. It is made up of only one terminal. This is a small terminal that is three levels. In the (hpn) Westchester county airport, there are only actually six gates. Because of the layout of the terminal, only four gates can be used at the same time. Also, only two of the gates actually have jet ways.

The layout of the (hpn) white plains westchester county airport is quite simple. On the first floor, there is one luggage carousel and one baggage claim office. On the second floor, one may find the six gates, a small amount of amenities, and only three TSA screening lanes. On the third floor there is an observation deck.

The (hpn) white plains Westchester county airport is extremely easy to navigate because of its size and layout. In fact, it is so small that there are often delays. Some of the airlines have ways to work out these problems. For instance, Jetblue has an extra set of stairs and ramps. This means that they can put people on their airplanes from the front (in the terminal) and from the back (outside) at the same time. They do this in order to make sure that their own flights are not delayed. However, no other airline uses these stairs, as they belong to JetBlue. Therefore, other airlines have delays due to the small space.

Airlines at the (HPN)

White Plains, Westchester County Airport

In January of 2007, Jet Blue Airways became the 8th airline to fly out of (hpn) White Plains, Westchester County Airport. JetBlue joined 7 other airlines when it started service in March of 2007. Therefore, the westchester county airport can get quite crowed.

Air Canada flies out of (hpn) White Plains Westchester County Airport. They are operated by Air Georgian. As well, AirTran Airways flies out of the (hpn) White Plains Westchester county airport. American Airlines also uses this airport, and this includes American Eagle flights. Also, Continental, with Continental Connection travels from Westchester.

Delta is the largest carrier out of (hpn) westchester county airport. They have three different flights, which are Delta Connections flights. These are operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Comair, and Shuttle America. Northwest, along with Northwest Airline, and United, along with United Express, join US Airways to make up the last of the airlines that operate flights from (hpn) White Plains, Westchester County Airport.

Business within the (HPN) White Plains, Westchester County Airport

The size of the (HPN) White Plains, Westchester County Airport does not allow for many different businesses. However, this is not to say that there are no businesses there. On the second level of the airport, one might find a coffee shop. There is also a bar and a restaurant. These both have views of the tarmac and runway, so that one might sit and watch other flights take off. There is also an eatery called the Skytop Restaurant. This eatery also has a view of the runway.

The third floor contains an outside observation deck, which is almost like a business in its own right. It is always very popular, as one is able to sit outside and watch the flights arrive and depart. This is a luxury that is not affordable at most of the other airports in the United States, due to increased security at larger airports.

The only actual store in the (hpn) White Plains westchester County airport, aside from the restaurants and bar, is a small candy bodega. This is located on the first floor of the Westchester County airport. At this store, one can find several items that are good for last minute shopping before one gets on their plane. Therefore, this is a very useful store to visit, although it is small

Services  (HPN)  Westchester County Airport

The size of the (HPN) White Plains, Westchester County Airport does not allow for many services. However, there are a number of ATMs that are inside of the terminal building. These can provide a passenger with the cash that they might need.

The Westchester County airport is also home to several services. In fact, there are several Fixed Based Operators that work out of this airport. These include Avitat, Landmark, Signature Flight Support, NetJets, Million Air, and Panorama. These small and private airlines use the airport, and can be of use to passengers, as long as they contact the office. Also, Million Air and Panorama operate flight schools out of this airport. Thus, one could actually take flying lessons from Westchester County airport.
Services and Amenities in the Westchester County Airport

The other services at the Westchester County airport do not pertain to passengers. These are services that are offered by the Fixed Based Operations, and are for other airlines. They include fueling services, repair services, and maintenance, among other things for airlines. A few of the FBOs do provide some passenger support, however this is for passengers of their own airlines. These include luxury services, such as limousine transportation. The luxury services, although intended for the FBO airlines, are often contracted by the major airlines in order to help them care for their passengers.

On all three floors of the airport, there are bathroom facilities. Also, there is an information and help desk located on the first floor. Here, one can ask for any other services that they might be in need of.
Security at the (Hpn)   White Plains, Westchester County Airport
A passenger should not be fooled by the small size of the westchester county airport, or by the fact that there is still an outside observation deck. Even with these two factors, the security at the(hpn)  Westchester County Airport is very tight. This is because of the location of (hpn) westchester county airport.

The (hpn) White Plains Westchester County airport is located in a very central part of the New York City and State territory. This means that from the (hpn) White Plains,Westchester County Airport, one could do damage to other airports or to surrounding areas. Therefore, the highest security measures are in place at (hpn) westchester county airport.

Although there are only three TSA security screeners, these are constantly in use. Therefore, the lines at t(hpn) white plains Westchester County airport might be long. Passengers are urged to arrive early. This is because each passenger is screened very carefully before being allowed to board any flights out of the ( Hpn) White Plains,Westchester County Airport. The baggage is all carefully screened as well.

In the past, the (hpn) westchester county airport has seen famous travelers. Often, there are passengers who use the (hpn) Westchester County Airport who need extra security. This is provided by police from the county, as well as police from White Plains. If needed, police from other towns can also be used.

All of these factors work together to provide the (hpn) white plains,Westchester County Airport, which is very small, with very tight security. One can fly in and out of this airport in confidence. Thus, it is a very safe airport from which to travel

It serves the areas of Westchester, a suburban county of New York City, as well as Fairfield County, Connecticut. It also serves, to a lesser extent, the New York metropolitan area, as it is located approximately 33 miles (53 km) north of Midtown Manhattan. It is often used by those who wish to avoid the congestion of the other New York City-area airports. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 511,559 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2006, up from 462,256 enplanements in 2005.

in 1947 the airport and surrounding property were handed over to the County of Westchester for commercial and civil aviation use, and re-named Westchester County Airport (HPN). The military still maintained
a presence at Westchester County Airport with a small Air National Guard contingent occupying the north-east corner if the airport.

In 1981, due to noise concerns and the addition of larger aircraft, the
Air National Guard moved from Westchester County Airport to Stewart
Airport (located in Newburg, NY).

Macarthur Airport is located on Long Island in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County, New York. It is owned and operated by the Town of Islip. The airport began in 1942 as three paved runways built by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (predecessor of the Federal Aviation Administration) during World War II. Lockheed Aircraft Corporation built the first hangar at the airport in 1944. The Town of Islip built a terminal in 1949, after taking the airport back from the Army Air Corps at the end of the war. Through the 1950s, Macarthur was used by Sperry Corporation for aviation research. Allegheny Airlines was its first commercial airline in 1960, offering flights to Boston, Philadelphia and Washington. The Douglas Macarthur terminal was completed in 1968 and American Airlines began operating non-stop flights to Chicago in 1971.
